Emily knelt.
“What name?”
Valerie looked frightened.
“I don't know if I'm supposed to say.”
Emily's heart broke.
Even children had learned secrecy from adults.
She took Valerie's hands.
“You don't have to say anything you don't want to.”
Richard watched.
He said nothing.
Good.
No pressure.
No command.
Valerie looked toward the gates.
Then at Rose.
“Mom said someone named Marcus.”
Vivian went white.
Richard noticed.
“Who is Marcus?”
No answer.
Emily looked at Vivian.
“You know.”
The older woman sat down.
“Yes.”
Rose's face hardened.
“Who?”
Vivian whispered:
“Anna's brother.”
Silence.
Richard stared.
“She never told me she had a brother.”
“She was told not to.”
“By who?”
“Her father.”
Of course.
Another family secret decided by a patriarch.
Emily asked:
“Why was Marcus erased?”
Vivian looked toward the girls.
“Because he challenged his father.”
“About what?”
“Rose.”
Rose stopped breathing.
Marcus had discovered his teenage sister's baby survived.
He tried to find the child.
Anna's father threatened to cut him off.
He refused to stop.
Then, at twenty-four, he disappeared from the family.
Richard asked:
“Where is he now?”
Vivian shook her head.
“I don't know.”
Jonathan's voice came through the gate speaker.
“I do.”
Emily looked at the monitor.
He smiled.
“Marcus is alive.”
Rose stepped closer.
Richard's jaw tightened.
“Where?”
Jonathan answered:
“Close.”
Emily frowned.
“How close?”
Jonathan looked directly into the camera.
“Closer than any of you realize.”
Then Victoria stepped forward.
“Tell them the rest.”
Jonathan looked at her.
For the first time, he seemed annoyed.
Interesting.
Victoria continued.
“Marcus is the reason Anna created the fifth account.”
Emily froze.
The forty-two-million-dollar account in her name.
“No.”
Victoria smiled.
“Yes.”
Emily stared.
“Why would Anna leave me forty-two million because of her brother?”
Jonathan answered:
“Because Sarah Parker raised Marcus too.”
Silence.
Emily stopped breathing.
Rose looked stunned.
Vivian covered her mouth.
Richard whispered:
“That is impossible.”
Jonathan continued.
“When Marcus was seventeen, he left his father's house.”
“Sarah gave him somewhere to stay.”
Emily felt the floor disappear beneath her.
Her mother.
Again.
Another hidden child.
Another secret life.
Sarah Parker had raised Emily.
Protected Rose.
Sheltered Marcus.
Known Anna.
And never told her own daughter any of it.
Emily whispered:
“Why?”
Jonathan smiled.
“Because your mother was paid to keep secrets.”
Emily's face hardened.
Rose stepped forward.
“No.”
Everyone looked at her.
She continued.
“Sarah wasn't like that.”
Jonathan laughed softly.
“You were a child.”
Rose's eyes filled.
“Yes.”
“And she raised me.”
Silence.
The distinction mattered.
Jonathan knew documents.
Rose knew the woman.
Jonathan continued:
“She took money.”
Rose answered:
“So do lawyers.”
His smile disappeared.
For one satisfying second, the woman from above the laundromat silenced the family attorney.
Then Valerie spoke again.
“Mom said Marcus was scared.”
Emily turned.
“Of who?”
Valerie tried to remember.
“The man with the bird ring.”
Richard froze.
Vivian went pale.
Emily noticed.
“What bird ring?”
Vivian whispered:
“Anna's father.”
Silence.
Anna's father wore a gold signet ring with a hawk.
The same man who arranged Rose's disappearance.
Threatened Marcus.
Controlled the family.
Created secrets that outlived him.
Emily looked toward the monitor.
Jonathan smiled again.
“Now you're getting close.”
Richard's voice became cold.
“My father-in-law is dead.”
Jonathan tilted his head.
“So was Anna's first daughter.”
Rose stiffened.
“So was Daniel Crane.”
Richard frowned.
“Who?”
Jonathan said nothing.
Emily noticed the surname.
Crane.
Jonathan's.
“What does Daniel Crane have to do with this?”
Jonathan's face changed.
Only slightly.
Emily saw it.
“Who is Daniel Crane?”
Jonathan stepped back from the camera.
Victoria looked at him.
“Tell them.”
He ignored her.
Emily stared.
“Jonathan.”
No answer.
Then Vivian whispered:
“His father.”
Everyone turned.
Jonathan Crane's father had once served as Anna's father's private attorney.
The man who prepared the hospital papers declaring Rose dead.
The man who wrote the first surrender document.
The man who helped erase Marcus from the family.
Emily looked toward Jonathan.
“You inherited the secret.”
He said nothing.
She continued.
“And then you tried to steal the girls' trust.”
Still nothing.
Jonathan's silence confirmed too much.
Then Rose asked:
“Did your father know Sarah?”
Jonathan's face hardened.
“Yes.”
“Did he pay her?”
A pause.
“Yes.”
Emily closed her eyes.
Six million dollars.
But Jonathan continued.
“Sarah never received it.”
Emily looked up sharply.
“What?”
“The account was created.”
“But the money remained untouched.”
Silence.
Jonathan's smile vanished.
“Your mother took nothing.”
Emily's eyes filled.
Rose began crying.
The woman who lived modestly while protecting other people's children had not been bought after all.
She had refused every dollar.
Jonathan looked toward Emily.
“And that is why Anna left forty-two million dollars in your name.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“The fifth account was not payment.”
