Chapter 4 - THE FILE THEY PREPARED FOR THE FATHER
Richard read the words again.
Emotionally compromised by grief.
Then he laughed once.
Broken.
“So first the girls become unstable.”
No one answered.
“Then Emily becomes an unreliable witness.”
Silence.
“And if I object, I become emotionally compromised.”
Victoria said,
“It was contingency planning.”
There it was.
The favorite phrase of people preparing permanent betrayal.
Emily looked at Richard.
“She didn’t need your permission.”
His face hardened.
“She needed your absence.”
That was the fifth crack.
Richard looked at her.
“What do you mean?”
Emily touched the pearl brooch.
Another recording played.
The unknown man’s voice returned.
“If Hale fights the school transfer, use the grief file.”
Victoria answered,
“And if he calls counsel?”
“He won’t have time.”
A pause.
“The wedding weekend is enough.”
Richard stopped breathing.
The unknown man continued.
“Ceremony Friday.”
“Girls leave Sunday.”
“Guardianship petition Monday.”
Emily looked at Richard.
Three days.
That was all they needed.
Victoria tried to leave.
The lawyer blocked the doorway.
“Stay.”
No shouting.
No chaos.
Worse.
She stayed.
Richard asked,
“Who is the man on the recording?”
Victoria said nothing.
Emily answered.
“I don’t know.”
Then Valerie finally spoke.
The quietest triplet.
The one Victoria wanted sent somewhere “specialized.”
“I do.”
Every adult turned.
Valerie looked at the recording brooch.
“I heard him in Mommy’s old room.”
Richard went still.
His late wife’s room had been locked for six years.
“Who?”
Valerie pointed toward the family portrait above the fireplace.
Not at Richard.
At the silver-haired man standing beside him in an old company photograph.
Richard’s face changed.
“That’s Jonathan Crane.”
His family attorney.
The man who had handled his wife’s estate.

And the only person besides Richard who knew exactly what the triplets would inherit at eighteen.
