Mr. Whitmore admitted taking pension money twelve years earlier when the family hotel division nearly collapsed.
“I intended to return it.”
Leah looked at the uniformed staff lining the wall.
“Workers lose homes when they miss one payment. Rich families steal millions and call it temporary.”
The pension withdrawal had purchased Victoria’s necklace, Ethan’s college apartment and renovations for the reception hall.
Ethan immediately surrendered his interest and requested an independent audit.
Victoria accused him of humiliating the family for a server.
Head housekeeper Rosa Grant stepped forward.
“We were already humiliated. We polished floors bought with our retirement money.”
The audit found Maria had discovered the theft and prepared to testify. Days later, she was declared mentally unstable and placed in a private clinic.
Leah had been told her mother died there from natural causes.
A nurse’s report said Maria was conscious and asking for her daughter.
Then security brought in a woman wearing a hospital bracelet.
