Rosa admitted taking the ledger but denied knowing Maria remained confined afterward.
“Your mother told me to save the workers’ proof before Victoria destroyed it.”
Maria stared at her.
“I also begged you to call Leah.”
Rosa’s voice broke.
“I feared the family would fire every employee and evict us from staff housing.”
Leah did not excuse her.
“Fear explains why poor people obey. It does not return the years you helped take.”
Rosa surrendered her leadership role and gave the ledger to an elected staff council.
The document showed the workers owned fifty-one percent of Whitmore Hospitality, not merely the mansion.
Victoria had scheduled the false theft accusation one day before the ownership clause became enforceable.
Federal investigators froze the company and Judge Malcolm Hale arrived with an emergency order declaring Leah financially incompetent.
He had never met her.
The order described her as unstable, aggressive and obsessed with revenge.
