Elena refused the executive title the board offered her.
“I spent years being invisible here. I will not prove my worth by sitting in the same chair that erased me.”
Instead, she accepted a trustee role alongside banquet workers, housekeepers, and scholarship recipients.
Margaret’s name was restored to the ballroom’s music archive.
Thomas Mercer was publicly cleared of accepting illegal adoption money.
Celeste faced charges for fraud, identity theft, unlawful adoption interference, and misuse of charitable funds.
As officers led her past the scattered contents of Elena’s clutch, Celeste whispered, “You will never belong in this family.”
Elena picked up the portrait.
“I belonged before you decided money made you the gatekeeper.”
For once, the guests applauded the woman in the apron instead of the woman in diamonds.
Elena did not smile.
Applause was easy after power changed sides.
