Chapter 3 - THE BABY CELESTE CLAIMED NEVER EXISTED.
Celeste denied touching any child.
The retired bartender, Samuel Price, produced an old employee incident log he had hidden for thirty-eight years.
It recorded Margaret screaming near the service elevator while Celeste carried an infant toward a private car.
The official entry had later been replaced with a note claiming Margaret suffered an emotional disturbance.
Elena stared at Celeste.
“You stole my mother’s baby?”
Celeste answered with cold contempt.
“Do not use that word. The family arranged proper care for a child Margaret could not support.”
Elena’s hands clenched around the photograph.
“My mother worked three jobs. You called her unfit because she was poor.”
Celeste replied, “Love does not pay hospital bills.”
“No,” Elena said. “But your family made sure she couldn’t.”
Henry demanded the child’s identity.
Celeste insisted the baby died shortly after placement.
Samuel disagreed.
He saw the infant again two years later at a Whitmore Christmas party, dressed in velvet and introduced as a distant cousin.
Henry went pale.
The Whitmore family had hidden his child inside its own social circle.
Elena asked who the child became.
Celeste refused.
Henry ordered the family archive opened.
Inside a sealed adoption ledger was one entry from 1987.
The infant’s birth name had been erased.
The adoptive parents were listed as Thomas and Evelyn Mercer.
