Chapter 6 - THE MOTHER WAITING OUTSIDE THE FRONT DOOR.
Margaret had come to the hotel six months earlier carrying letters, birth records, and proof of the twins’ identities.
Celeste met her in a private office and offered one final settlement.
Two million dollars in exchange for silence.
Margaret refused.
She asked only to see Elena and Caroline together.
Celeste called security.
The same hotel that celebrated motherhood at charity dinners removed an elderly woman through the loading dock because her truth threatened the guest list.
Elena’s voice hardened.
“You spent more protecting the lie than my mother ever asked from you.”
Celeste replied, “Your mother wanted access to a life she could not manage.”
Caroline stepped closer.
“She managed without servants, trusts, or lawyers. You couldn’t manage one honest conversation.”
Henry ordered the office footage restored.
The video showed Margaret leaving a sealed envelope with the receptionist.
Celeste later removed it.
Inside should have been letters for both daughters.
Celeste claimed she destroyed them.
Then a young banquet runner admitted finding the envelope in the trash and hiding it in the piano bench.
Henry opened the bench.
The letters were gone.
In their place was a recent photograph of Margaret standing outside the ballroom.
Someone had written a time beneath it.
10:45 p.m.
Henry checked the clock.
It was 10:43.
