Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN THEY PAID TO DISAPPEAR.
Henry said the woman in the portrait was Margaret Vale, the hotel’s former ballroom pianist—and the only woman he had ever planned to marry.
Celeste laughed sharply.
“Planned? You mean the employee you embarrassed yourself with before Father corrected you.”
Elena looked between them.
“My mother said she worked in restaurants. She never mentioned this hotel.”
Celeste replied, “Because people from service corridors often invent cleaner versions of their failures.”
Henry’s face hardened.
“Margaret did not fail. We failed her.”
In 1987, Margaret became pregnant. Henry wanted to acknowledge the child, but the Whitmore family threatened to remove him from the company and blacklist Margaret across Philadelphia hotels.
They offered her money to leave Pennsylvania and sign a document stating Henry was not the father.
Margaret refused the money.
The family destroyed her employment record anyway.
Elena’s voice broke.
“She cleaned motel rooms while you held charity galas in her name?”
Henry lowered his eyes.
“I was told she miscarried.”
Celeste folded her arms.
“You were told what preserved the family.”
A retired bartender stepped forward from the guests.
He remembered Margaret leaving the hotel with a newborn wrapped in a kitchen towel because security refused to let her use the front entrance.
Then he revealed something worse.
