Chapter 4 - THE FATHER WHO BOUGHT A CLEANER STORY.
Elena had loved Thomas Mercer.
He drove city buses, packed her school lunches, and taught her never to feel ashamed of honest work.
Now the adoption ledger suggested he had not simply rescued an abandoned child.
He had accepted one taken from Margaret.
Henry asked whether Thomas ever spoke about the Whitmores.
Elena remembered one warning.
“Never trust a family that calls payment generosity.”
Celeste seized on it.
“You see? He took our money and still poisoned her against us.”
Elena stood slowly.
“He raised me on a bus driver’s salary while you erased my mother and called yourselves charitable. Do not speak his name like he owed you gratitude.”
The ledger showed Thomas and Evelyn Mercer received monthly payments from the Whitmore Foundation for eighteen years.
But the money never reached Elena’s household.
Samuel recognized the account number.
It belonged to a private trust controlled by Celeste.
She had redirected the payments while allowing the family to believe Elena was being supported.
Henry’s voice turned icy.
“You took the child, stole the support, and let her grow up believing she was unwanted.”
Celeste said the funds were used for necessary discretion.
Then Elena found a second name beneath the adoption entry.
“Twin female—retained by family.”
Elena stopped breathing.
She had not been the only baby Margaret delivered.
The Whitmores had kept her twin.
