Chapter 1 - THE SHOVE BEFORE THE VERDICT.

Lena Carter had entered the courtroom expecting a custody hearing.

She did not expect her husband to attack her before the judge had finished reading the first page.

Marcus Hale stood over her in a navy suit, pointing close enough for Lena to feel his breath.

“You ruined everything!”

Lena protected her pregnant belly with one hand.

“Please don’t hurt my baby.”

Marcus shoved her shoulder and brushed her cheek with a fast, angry motion.

The contact was brief, but the humiliation filled the room.

Spectators gasped.

No one moved.

Marcus came from one of the wealthiest families in Massachusetts.

His company donated to judicial campaigns, hospitals, and domestic-violence charities.

People had spent years learning that challenging him could cost them jobs, contracts, or invitations into powerful rooms.

Then Arthur Vale, a silver-haired man standing behind the rail, slammed both hands against the wood.

“Stop right now!”

He crossed the gate, pulled Marcus away from Lena, blocked his swing, and forced him to one knee.

Court officers rushed forward.

The judge ordered Marcus restrained.

Arthur turned toward Lena immediately.

“Are you hurt?”

Lena shook her head, crying too hard to answer.

Marcus struggled against the officers.

“She is manipulating all of you!”

Arthur stepped between him and Lena.

“In this room, no one gets to harm her.”

The judge ordered Marcus arrested for contempt and assault.

For one moment, justice seemed immediate.

Then Marcus’s attorney rose calmly.

He placed a medical file on the table.

“Your Honor, before my client is removed, the court should know that Mrs. Hale has already been declared mentally unfit.”

Lena stared at the document.

Her signature appeared at the bottom.

She had never seen it before.
