Chapter 8 - THE OLD MAN WITH THE SEALED RECORD.
Arthur did not resist when the investigators approached.
The warrant alleged that he had removed corporate records, concealed Rachel’s location, and obstructed an earlier investigation into Hale Corporation.
Marcus smiled for the first time since Rachel appeared.
He accused Arthur of manufacturing the entire case to destroy the family that once employed him.
Lena refused to abandon Arthur simply because an official document accused him.
She had learned how easily paperwork could be weaponized.
Arthur admitted taking records from Hale Corporation twenty-five years earlier.
He had discovered evidence that Marcus’s father diverted employee funds and paid judges to approve fraudulent guardianships.
Arthur gave the files to federal investigators.
The case disappeared.
A senior prosecutor later joined the Hale family law firm.
Arthur realized the investigation itself had been compromised.
When Rachel came to him years later, he did not trust the system enough to expose her location.
He helped her disappear.
That decision may have violated the law.
It also kept her alive and free.
The lead investigator said Arthur’s old file had been reopened because new evidence suggested he kept one document for himself.
Arthur denied possessing it.
Eleanor watched him carefully.
Lena noticed.
She asked what the missing document contained.
The investigator described a handwritten list of officials paid through the Hale Foundation.
One name belonged to the judge currently presiding over the hearing.
The courtroom erupted.
The judge ordered silence, but the authority in his voice had changed.
Arthur looked at him with recognition.
The judge had been a young attorney when Rachel was first declared unstable.
He had signed the emergency order giving Marcus access to her finances.
The judge insisted he remembered nothing improper.
Rachel did.
She said he refused to let her speak and accepted the family doctor’s report without review.
Lena felt the room tilt again.
The man responsible for judging Marcus may have helped create the system protecting him.
Then Arthur reached inside his tuxedo and removed a sealed envelope.
“I did keep the list.”
He placed it on the clerk’s desk.
