Chapter 2 - THE FILE THAT CALLED HER UNSTABLE.
Marcus’s attorney claimed Lena had suffered episodes of paranoia, confusion, and emotional instability throughout her pregnancy.
The medical file recommended that Marcus receive temporary control over her finances, healthcare decisions, and the unborn child’s legal interests.
The courtroom changed instantly.
People who had just watched Marcus touch her aggressively began looking at Lena with doubt.
The evidence of his behavior stood in front of them.
But one polished document was enough to make the wealthy man appear concerned and the frightened woman appear unreliable.
Lena said the report was false.
Marcus’s attorney smiled gently, the way powerful men smiled when they wanted cruelty to sound professional.
“Mrs. Hale’s refusal to accept her diagnosis is itself documented.”
Arthur asked who signed the evaluation.
The doctor was affiliated with Hale Medical Partners, a private network funded by Marcus’s family.
Marcus claimed the connection was irrelevant.
He said his family had paid for the best care available.
Lena understood the trap.
When poor women could not afford treatment, they were called irresponsible.
When wealthy men bought the doctors, the medical opinion became unquestionable.
The judge ordered the report examined but refused to release Marcus immediately.
Arthur remained beside Lena.
Marcus’s mother, Eleanor Hale, entered the courtroom late in a pearl-gray suit.
She did not ask whether Lena was safe.
She asked whether the press had seen the altercation.
Then she leaned toward Lena and whispered, “You should have accepted the settlement.”
The settlement would have required Lena to leave the state, surrender her claim to Hale property, and allow Marcus’s family to supervise every decision involving the baby.
Lena had refused.
Arthur heard Eleanor’s warning.
Before he could respond, Lena opened her handbag and removed a small digital recorder.
“I recorded the doctor’s appointment.”
Marcus stopped struggling.
The recording began with the doctor saying, “Mrs. Hale, your husband already approved the diagnosis.”
Then another voice entered the room.
