Chapter 3 - THE MOTHER WHO BOUGHT THE DIAGNOSIS.
Eleanor did not deny being present.
She claimed Lena’s emotional condition had frightened the family.
According to her, the evaluation was not punishment.
It was protection.
The word echoed through the courtroom.
The Hales used protection whenever they meant control.
They protected Lena by monitoring her phone.
They protected the baby by freezing Lena’s bank account.
They protected the family by telling newspapers she had become unstable.
Every action removed another piece of her independence while allowing Marcus to appear responsible.
The judge ordered the doctor’s full records preserved.
Marcus’s attorney objected, warning that the files contained private family information.
Arthur looked at him.
“You used privacy to build the lie. You don’t get to hide behind it now.”
Eleanor recognized Arthur for the first time.
Her expression shifted.
He was not merely an elderly spectator.
Arthur Vale had once been chief counsel for the Hale Corporation before resigning twenty-five years earlier.
Marcus called him a bitter former employee.
Arthur answered quietly.
“I resigned because your father asked me to destroy evidence.”
The courtroom fell silent again.
Lena had never known Arthur worked for the Hales.
She knew him only as the retired volunteer who helped women at the legal clinic where she sought advice.
Eleanor accused Arthur of using Lena to settle an old grudge.
The accusation was designed to erase Lena once more.
If Arthur had a motive, then her injuries, recordings, and fear could all be dismissed as someone else’s strategy.
Lena refused to let that happen.
“I came to him because every attorney your family recommended reported back to Marcus.”
Arthur placed a sealed envelope before the judge.
Inside were billing records showing that Marcus’s law firm had paid the doctor three days before the evaluation.
The payment was labeled “litigation preparation.”
Marcus said the phrase was routine.
Then the court clerk found a second payment.
It had been made to the same doctor eight years earlier.
