Chapter 4 - THE FIRST WIFE THEY ERASED.

Marcus told the court his first wife, Rachel, had left the marriage voluntarily.

He said she moved overseas after suffering a breakdown.

Eleanor added that Rachel had always been fragile and overwhelmed by the responsibilities of marrying into a prominent family.

The language was almost identical to the phrases used against Lena.

Arthur had heard them before.

He explained that Rachel came from a working-class family in Rhode Island.

She was intelligent, ambitious, and deeply involved in the Hale Foundation’s employee-housing program.

When she discovered that relocation funds were missing, Marcus began telling friends she was emotionally unstable.

The private doctor diagnosed her.

The family attorney prepared a settlement.

Then Rachel vanished.

Marcus accused Arthur of inventing a conspiracy.

The judge asked whether anyone had contacted Rachel recently.

No one had.

Marcus claimed she demanded privacy.

Arthur opened another file.

Rachel’s passport had not been used in eight years.

Her Social Security number remained active through a consulting company owned by Eleanor.

Someone had continued receiving payments in Rachel’s name.

Lena felt a chill.

The Hale family had not merely silenced women.

They had turned their identities into financial tools after removing them from public view.

Eleanor insisted the payments were part of a confidential divorce settlement.

Arthur asked to see the divorce decree.

Marcus’s attorney said it had been sealed.

The judge ordered it produced.

The clerk searched the court database.

No divorce had ever been finalized.

Legally, Rachel was still Marcus’s wife.

The marriage to Lena might never have been valid.

Marcus’s confidence cracked.

He turned toward Lena.

“You knew.”

She had not known.

But the accusation revealed what he feared most.

Someone had discovered the truth before the hearing.

Then a woman stood in the back row of the courtroom.

She wore a plain navy coat and dark glasses.

“My name is Rachel Hale.”

Marcus went completely still.

May you like

Rachel removed the glasses.

“I never left the country.”
