Chapter 1 - The Camera Victoria Forgot

Sarah burst through the rain-soaked glass doors and found four-year-old Lily crying beside a fallen red heel.

“Mom!”

Sarah dropped to her knees, checked Lily’s face and arms, then lifted her tightly against her chest.

Victoria remained seated in an ivory robe as if a terrified child were merely an inconvenience.

“She broke my shoe and started screaming.”

Daniel rushed down the marble staircase.

“That is not what happened.”

Lily buried her face against Sarah’s tactical vest.

“She raised the shoe at me.”

Victoria stood.

“Children lie when weak mothers teach them to fear discipline.”

Sarah turned her body between Lily and the adults.

“You call terror discipline because money has protected you from hearing the word abuse.”

Daniel pointed toward the ceiling.

“The security camera recorded everything.”

Victoria’s confidence vanished.

Sarah ordered arriving agents to secure the red heel and the mansion’s recording system.

The footage showed Victoria standing over Lily with the shoe raised while Daniel tried to intervene.

But the clip began thirty minutes earlier.

Victoria could be heard speaking to someone on the phone.

“The child must be crying when Sarah arrives. Her reaction will prove she is too unstable to keep custody.”

Then a man answered, “The emergency order is already signed.”

Sarah recognized the voice.

It belonged to the federal judge supervising her current investigation.
