Chapter 4 - The Mother Hidden in a Uniform
Maria Delgado stood in the service hallway wearing the uniform of a woman the Harringtons rarely bothered to see.
Sarah had been told Maria died in a highway accident when Sarah was twelve.
Instead, Maria had spent years working under false names inside Harrington properties.
Sarah’s voice cracked.
“You were alive while I buried you.”
Maria did not ask for instant forgiveness.
“Harrison threatened to place you in a behavioral institution if I returned. I believed distance kept you safe.”
Sarah’s pain sharpened.
“Fear explains why you left. It does not return twenty-five stolen years.”
Victoria laughed from the foyer.
“This is absurd. One maid appears, and suddenly every servant’s fantasy becomes evidence.”
Maria faced her.
“Your family loves uniforms because they make human beings easier to ignore.”
She produced payroll ledgers from the Harrington Foundation.
Money donated for foster children had been used to purchase mansions, fund private campaigns and pay family-court evaluators.
Domestic employees were forced to contribute part of their wages to a “child protection fund” that financed the very system threatening their families.
Harrison called the records stolen.
Maria answered, “You stole from children first. I merely stopped asking permission to prove it.”
Daniel admitted his father warned him that exposing the foundation would ruin thousands of charitable programs.
Sarah turned on him.
“So you protected the institution and left Lily alone with Victoria?”
Daniel lowered his head.
“I thought I could gather evidence quietly.”
Lily looked at him through tears.
“You heard me cry.”
