Chapter 2 - The Custody Order Written First
Judge Harrison Vale arrived with attorneys before the agents finished copying the security footage.
He claimed Sarah had entered the mansion unlawfully, frightened Lily and abused her FBI authority during a private family disagreement.
Sarah held her daughter closer.
“A woman threatens a four-year-old, and your first concern is the wet floor my boots touched?”
Victoria smiled.
“People like you always confuse a badge with breeding. You can wear federal letters across your chest, but you are still the daughter of a motel housekeeper.”
Sarah’s voice turned cold.
“My mother cleaned rooms your friends destroyed. Honest labor never made her inferior. Your cruelty makes you small.”
Harrison produced an emergency custody order transferring Lily to Daniel and Victoria.
The document cited Sarah’s “violent entrance,” Lily’s tears and Victoria’s damaged shoe—details recorded before Sarah reached the estate.
Daniel stared at the date.
“You wrote the conclusion before creating the scene.”
Harrison dismissed him.
“The Harrington family cannot leave a valuable child with a woman who runs toward danger for a living.”
Lily’s inheritance included controlling shares in the Harrington Children’s Foundation after her fifth birthday.
Sarah had been investigating that foundation for missing foster-care funds.
Victoria needed custody before Lily’s birthday to control the shares.
An agent opened the red heel.
Hidden inside the broken sole was a memory card.
Its first file was labeled:

LILY INCIDENT—ATTEMPT FOUR.
The previous three incidents had taken place while Daniel was away.
