THE ROPE SHE REFUSED TO DROP / Chapter 1 / 10

Chapter 1 - The Housekeeper Who Held On

Laura hung three feet above the turquoise pool while Maria fought to control the rope cutting across her palms.

“Maria, please don’t let go!”

“I’ve got you. Keep your legs still.”

Evelyn stormed onto the terrace and grabbed Maria’s shoulder.

“Pull her up! That uniform does not give you permission to disobey me.”

Maria refused to release the line.

“If I pull now, the harness could twist.”

Daniel ran from the villa and ordered, “Stop arguing. Lower her into the shallow end.”

Maria carefully fed the rope until Laura’s feet touched the pool floor, then rushed down the steps and supported her.

Laura clung to her, sobbing.

“She saved me.”

Evelyn looked at the guests watching from the balcony.

“She caused this. Housekeepers always create disasters, then expect praise for cleaning them.”

Maria’s exhausted face hardened.

“I have cleaned your rooms for eighteen years, Mrs. Vale. I will not clean another lie.”

Daniel examined the anchor.

Someone had loosened two bolts and cut halfway through the safety strap.

Evelyn blamed Maria.

Then Laura opened her wet hand.

Inside was a small brass key she had found tied beneath the balcony rail.

“It opens Father’s old payroll vault,” she said.

Evelyn went pale.

Before anyone moved, her phone played a voice message automatically.

A man said, “If Laura reaches that vault, make sure Maria takes the blame for the fall.”
