Chapter 9 - The Mother Maria Was Paid to Hide
Maria admitted finding Ana inside a Vale clinic sixteen years earlier.
Ana wanted to reclaim Laura and expose the adoption network.
Evelyn threatened to return Isabella to the same facility and cancel treatment for Maria’s dying husband.
Maria accepted money, moved Ana to another state and promised to contact Laura when it was safe.
She never did.
Laura faced her with tears and rage.
“You saved me over the pool, but you helped them steal my entire childhood.”
Maria did not defend herself.
“Yes. I held the rope today because I failed to hold on to your mother then.”
Isabella turned away from her.
“You sacrificed Ana to bring me home, and they kept me anyway.”
Maria agreed to surrender her chairmanship and testify without seeking protection.
The worker council refused to hide her betrayal simply because she was poor and loyal in other moments.
Evelyn laughed from custody.
“Everyone has a price.”
Laura answered, “No. You create desperation, then point at the desperate person as proof everyone is corrupt.”
Agents located Ana in Oregon, running a shelter for mothers escaping coercive guardianships.
She reunited with Laura slowly, without demanding the title of mother immediately.
Ana revealed she had sent the harness drive because someone inside the worker council was still transferring assets to the national adoption network.
The authorization came from Isabella’s new account.
Isabella swore she had never used it.
Security footage showed her entering the bank.
The woman had Isabella’s face.
