THE ROPE SHE REFUSED TO DROP / Chapter 2 / 10

Chapter 2 - The Accident Written Before It Happened

Evelyn claimed the voice message was fabricated.

She ordered security to remove Maria from the property before police arrived.

Daniel stepped between them.

“No one touches her.”

Evelyn laughed with contempt.

“You are defending a servant against your own mother?”

“I’m defending the woman who kept Laura alive while you screamed orders from a dry balcony.”

Security recovered footage showing Evelyn near the rope anchor that morning.

She wore gloves and carried a wrench.

Evelyn insisted she had been checking decorations.

Laura pointed toward a folder on the pool table.

It contained an emergency competency petition declaring her mentally unstable after a “reckless balcony incident.”

The petition had been prepared two days earlier.

Maria read the first page.

“You planned the accident, wrote her madness in advance and chose the housekeeper as your witness because you thought nobody would believe me.”

Evelyn’s expression turned cruel.

“People believe records, Maria. They do not believe women who enter through service doors.”

Laura answered, “That is why you hired doctors, lawyers and judges to write the lie before we could speak.”

The petition transferred Laura’s company shares to Evelyn if she were hospitalized.

Daniel discovered his own signature approving it.

He had signed a stack of estate documents without reading them.

Then the brass key opened a hidden drawer beneath the pool bar.

Inside was their late father’s handwritten ledger.
