Chapter 3 - The Servant Who Owned the Mansion
Maria stared at the ledger as Evelyn tore it from Daniel’s hands.
“This is nonsense. My husband gave employees bonuses, not ownership.”
Maria’s voice shook with rage.
“Your husband could not pay the mortgage in 2008. Housekeepers, gardeners and drivers surrendered wages to save this estate. He promised us shares.”
Evelyn sneered.
“You folded sheets and trimmed hedges. Do not confuse labor with leadership.”
Laura stepped forward in her dripping lavender dress.
“They kept this family from bankruptcy while you hosted charity lunches about helping the poor.”
The ledger showed hundreds of employees accepted reduced pay, unpaid overtime and delayed pensions.
Their money financed the Beverly Hills estate, the vineyard and Daniel’s company.
When profits returned, Evelyn renamed the worker fund a family loan and removed every employee signature.
Maria’s husband died without receiving the medical benefits he had funded.
Evelyn called that unfortunate.
Maria answered, “He died counting pills while you selected imported marble for the bathroom he cleaned.”
Daniel ordered the ledger copied and sent to federal investigators.
Evelyn warned him that exposing the fraud would destroy thousands of jobs.
Laura’s reply was brutal.
“You steal from workers, then hide behind their paychecks whenever accountability comes.”
A final ledger entry referred to a witness named Isabella Santos.
Maria stopped breathing.
Isabella was her daughter, an estate accountant who vanished five years earlier.
Evelyn had told Maria she ran away after stealing.
