Chapter 3 - THE DINNER WAS ONLY THE FIRST STEP.

Margaret admitted she planned to disgrace Emily, but insisted she was protecting Daniel.

She claimed Emily had been secretly moving money from the Whitmore family trust into a restaurant account.

Vanessa placed bank statements on the table.

The transfers totaled four hundred thousand dollars.

Daniel looked at his wife.

“Tell me this isn’t yours.”

Emily recognized the account name but not the transactions.

She had opened a small catering business before marriage. Margaret often mocked it as “a hobby for women who serve real families.”

The transfers had been made using Emily’s digital signature.

Margaret crossed her arms.

“You see? The mouse was disgusting, but theft is worse. I needed witnesses before she cried her way out of it.”

Emily’s voice shook with fury.

“You planted filth in my food so no one would listen when you called me a thief.”

Vanessa replied, “No one forced you to marry above your station.”

Daniel slammed his hand on the table.

“Enough.”

Emily examined the statement timestamps.

Every transfer occurred while she was working charity events at the Whitmore hotel.

The authorization device belonged to the mansion office.

Richard checked the security log.

Margaret’s code had opened that office on every date.

Then the final transfer appeared.

It had not gone into Emily’s catering account.

It had gone into a company called Carter Hospitality.

The owner was Emily’s dead father.
