Chapter 6 - THE FAMILY THAT DIAGNOSED DISOBEDIENCE.
The physician who signed Daniel’s report had never examined him.
He worked for the Whitmore Foundation and had previously declared three employees mentally unfit after they challenged wage theft.
One was Samuel Carter.
Emily read the old file.
Her father’s anger over missing pay had been labeled paranoia.
His refusal to accept a settlement had been called obsessive behavior.
His poverty became evidence that he could not think rationally.
Daniel’s new report used the same phrases.
Margaret spoke without shame.
“Men in this family inherit responsibility. When they become emotional over women, someone must protect the institution.”
Emily looked at her.
“You mean when they stop obeying you.”
Vanessa told Daniel to sign temporary control over the company.
“If you refuse, the board will see tonight’s outburst as proof.”
Daniel tore the document in half.
Margaret’s face hardened.
“You would throw away generations of wealth for a woman who served soup in church basements?”
Emily stepped between them.
“My mother served in those basements because your hotel cut her health insurance.”
Richard demanded the foundation’s medical files.
A backup server revealed dozens of workers diagnosed after filing complaints.
Then one name appeared that none of them expected.
Emily Carter.
A psychiatric commitment order had been prepared for her six months earlier.
The approving witness was Daniel.
