Chapter 8 - THE THING MARGARET BROUGHT INTO THE HOUSE.
Rosa had seen Margaret enter the pantry carrying a small sealed container before dinner.
She loosened the vent and placed the motionless mouse above the grille herself.
The sabotage was fully planned.
Margaret did not merely exploit an accident.
She brought the evidence into the house.
Vanessa recoiled.
“You said the vent was already broken.”
Margaret turned on her daughter.
“And you said Emily’s humiliation would make the trust transfer easier.”
Their alliance collapsed in front of everyone.
Rosa admitted she stayed silent because Margaret threatened to cancel her husband’s home-care benefits.
Emily looked at her, wounded.
“You watched me serve that soup.”
Rosa began crying.
“I also shut off the dining-room heat so no one would eat quickly. I was trying to buy time.”
Both truths mattered.
Fear explained silence.
It did not erase the danger.
Rosa surrendered the container receipt and agreed to testify.
Richard called the police and health department.
Margaret remained calm.
“No one was harmed. At worst, this is a cruel family argument.”
Emily’s voice became steel.
“You needed someone to swallow it before you considered it serious?”
Then Daniel opened the sealed container receipt.
It had been purchased using the Whitmore Foundation’s community food-safety account.
The same account funded inspections of low-income restaurants.
Margaret had used charity money to frame a working-class cook’s daughter.
