Chapter 1 - THE CONTRACT TORN AT HER FEET.

Marcus tore Claire’s access card and employment contract in half, then dropped the pieces beside her shoes.

Evelyn Hale watched from her leather chair with one leg crossed, gold bracelets shining beneath the lamp.

“You leave this house with nothing.”

Claire looked down at the contract she had spent eleven years honoring. She had managed medical appointments, estate taxes, staff housing, and every crisis the Hale family wanted handled without public embarrassment.

Evelyn had never called her loyal.

Only useful.

“No one here will believe the staff over me,” Evelyn said. “People like you borrow authority from the rooms we allow you to enter.”

Claire’s hand tightened, but she did not bend to collect the pieces.

Instead, she removed a black phone from her pocket.

“Mr. Hale, she just admitted everything. Please come inside.”

Evelyn slammed her tumbler onto the table.

“Marcus, take that phone.”

Marcus moved around the sofa, knocking the brass lamp onto the rug.

“End the call.”

Claire did not step back.

A heavy door handle clicked in the hallway.

“Too late,” she said. “He heard every word.”

Evelyn’s face changed.

Then Arthur Hale spoke from behind the closed door.

“I also heard what you said about the missing staff pensions.”
