Chapter 2 - THE CHAIRMAN BEHIND THE DOOR.
Arthur Hale entered the library carrying no attorney, no assistant, and none of the ceremonial warmth he displayed at charity dinners.
He looked first at Claire, then at the torn contract on the rug.
Evelyn recovered quickly.
“She was dismissed for stealing confidential records.”
Claire answered, “I copied records showing that thirty-two employees paid into pensions your office emptied.”
Evelyn smiled coldly.
“Listen to her, Arthur. A coordinator with community-college accounting classes thinks she understands a family trust.”
Claire’s eyes hardened.
“My education taught me subtraction. Your employees paid in. Your investment company took it out.”
Arthur asked Marcus to step away from Claire.
For the first time, Marcus hesitated before obeying Evelyn.
She pointed toward Claire’s phone.
“That woman is recording a private family conversation.”
Arthur replied, “You made it a company matter when you used employee money.”
Claire played the audio.
Evelyn’s own voice filled the lounge:
“Staff members do not need full pensions. Housing them on the estate is compensation enough.”
The room went silent.
Several housekeepers and drivers were listening through the open doorway.
Evelyn looked at them with disgust.
“Go back downstairs. This is above your station.”
Arthur turned toward her.
“No. This house may be below theirs.”
He picked up one torn contract piece.
