Chapter 8 - THE SIGNATURE STOLEN FROM HER PAYROLL FILE.
The forged court application used Claire’s signature from a direct-deposit form.
It described Arthur as confused and Claire as a manipulative employee seeking control of the estate.
Evelyn had prepared the narrative perfectly.
If Arthur resisted, he was incompetent.
If Claire exposed the fraud, she was ambitious.
If staff members supported her, they were an organized threat.
The family attorney said the order remained active until a judge reviewed the evidence.
Evelyn’s confidence returned.
“Now you understand the difference between having truth and having power.”
Claire lifted her phone.
“The call never ended.”
Arthur’s independent counsel, a state investigator, and the emergency judge had heard the entire confrontation live.
The judge suspended the order immediately and instructed police to preserve every document in the townhouse.
Evelyn stared at Claire.
“You planned this.”
“No,” Claire replied. “You did. I only stopped deleting the evidence.”
Marcus surrendered the leather case, the intercepted letters, and his communications with Evelyn.
The employees signed statements together.
For once, no single housekeeper could be isolated, threatened, or called confused.
Then investigators opened Evelyn’s private accounting ledger.
Payments had been made for years to a facility called Hawthorne House.
Rosa Bell was there.
So were three former Hale employees the family claimed had retired.
But the final resident’s name silenced Arthur.
