Chapter 4 - THE RECORDING INSIDE THE LAMP.
Marcus lifted the fallen lamp and unscrewed its brass base.
Inside was an old digital recorder wrapped in velvet.
Arthur recognized it as belonging to his late wife, Margaret.
Evelyn tried to take it.
Claire blocked her with one raised hand.
“You ordered Marcus not to touch me. Extend yourself the same courtesy.”
The words landed with quiet satisfaction.
Arthur pressed play.
Margaret’s voice filled the room.
“If you are hearing this, Evelyn has started removing employees the way she removed me.”
Arthur went pale.
Margaret had died twelve years earlier after a long illness. At least, that was the story Evelyn’s doctors and attorneys gave him.
The recording continued.
Margaret said she discovered that Evelyn diverted staff pensions and housing funds into private Hale companies. When Margaret threatened to expose it, Evelyn arranged a medical evaluation calling her paranoid and confused.
Evelyn laughed bitterly.
“She was sick.”
Margaret’s recorded voice answered as if she had anticipated the defense.
“They will call me sick because wealthy families cannot admit a woman understood the numbers better than they did.”
Claire looked at Arthur.
“Your wife was not confused. She was being buried under paperwork.”
Arthur asked where the original trust documents were.
Margaret’s message named the person who hid them.
Claire’s mother, Teresa Lane, had worked as a Hale housekeeper and evening paralegal.
The family accused her of stealing jewelry and destroyed her career.

“Teresa did not steal the diamonds. Evelyn placed them in her locker.”
