Chapter 3 - THE JOB TITLE SHE TRIED TO ERASE.

Claire’s contract did more than employ her as estate coordinator.
It appointed her independent witness for the Hale Domestic Employee Trust, a fund created decades earlier to protect housekeepers, drivers, cooks, and maintenance workers from retaliation.
Evelyn had torn the contract because Claire refused to approve a transfer from that trust into Hale Development.
The money funded a luxury townhouse renovation, private club dues, and the library’s imported liquor cabinet.
Evelyn lifted her chin.
“The family owns the estate. Improvements preserve everyone’s employment.”
Claire looked toward the staff gathered at the doorway.
“You stole their retirement to polish the room where you call them replaceable.”
Marcus told Claire to watch her tone.
She turned toward him.
“Your mother worked in this house for twenty-six years. Her pension disappeared too. Are you protecting Evelyn—or protecting the promotion she gave you for staying quiet?”
Marcus’s face tightened.
Evelyn spoke before he could answer.
“His mother was provided an apartment until she became difficult.”
Marcus looked at her.
“You told me she left voluntarily.”
“She embarrassed the family by demanding records,” Evelyn replied. “I removed a problem.”
Arthur’s expression changed.
Marcus’s mother, Rosa Bell, had supposedly moved to Florida six years earlier.
Claire opened a folder on her phone.
Rosa had not moved.
She had been placed in a Hale-funded private residence after being declared mentally unstable.
The approving signature belonged to Arthur.
He stared at it.
“I never signed this.”
Claire’s voice dropped.
“You signed a blank medical authorization while recovering from surgery.”

Then the fallen lamp began emitting a faint electronic beep.
Something had been hidden inside its base.
