Chapter 4 - The Dead Patriarch Behind the Hospital

Charles Mercer was found in a private residence beneath the family hospital.
He had faked his death to escape federal scrutiny after the employee fund first came under investigation.
Daniel confronted him through a secured glass wall.
“You watched us bury an empty coffin.”
Charles answered without remorse.
“Grief made the family obedient. A public scandal would have destroyed thousands of jobs.”
Eleanor stepped forward.
“You stole their wages, then used their jobs as a shield whenever the truth arrived.”
Charles called her ungrateful.
“You entered our home carrying laundry baskets. My family gave you a name.”
Eleanor’s voice became sharp enough to silence the room.
“I worked for every meal. You did not rescue me from poverty. You profited from it.”
Charles admitted approving Eleanor’s sedation because she planned to transfer controlling shares to an employee trust.
Victor was supposed to keep her confined until Daniel signed over temporary authority.
The funeral had not been part of the original plan.
Victor had decided that a burial would end the risk permanently.
Federal agents arrested Charles, Hale and Claire.
Victor remained protected by a court order declaring Eleanor mentally incompetent.
The order had been signed the previous evening by Judge Leonard Crane, Charles’s oldest friend.
Eleanor laughed bitterly.
“You nearly buried me alive, and your judge still calls me the dangerous one.”
Daniel demanded an independent hearing.
Then Judge Crane entered the hospital with armed court officers.
He held a guardianship order transferring Eleanor’s company, medical decisions and legal identity to Victor.
At the bottom was Eleanor’s genuine signature.
She stared at it.

“That is not a guardianship form.”
“It is my marriage certificate.”
