Chapter 6 - The Company Built From Stolen Paychecks
The charter proved Mercer Hotels had been rescued during the 1980s by employees who surrendered wages, pensions and overtime.
In return, workers received fifty-one percent ownership.
Charles’s father destroyed the public copy and replaced it with a loan agreement claiming the Mercer family alone saved the company.
Eleanor had found the original charter in the hotel laundry archives.
Victor mocked the workers gathered around the table.
“You honestly believe housekeepers should control luxury properties?”
Eleanor answered with controlled fury.
“They cleaned the rooms, balanced the accounts and kept guests safe while you inherited cuff links. They already controlled the work. You only controlled the story.”
Daniel surrendered every personal share connected to the fraud.
Claire called him foolish from federal custody.
“You are throwing away a fortune.”
Daniel replied, “A fortune built from stolen wages is evidence, not inheritance.”
The court installed an employee council and removed Charles and Victor from management.
Former cooks and drivers took the seats once reserved for Mercer relatives.
Victor watched security escort him through the same service corridor workers had used for decades.
The reversal was public and humiliating.
Then Dr. Hale offered prosecutors a deal.
He claimed Eleanor had not discovered the charter by accident.
She had been sent into the Mercer hotel thirty years earlier by a labor organization that planned to seize the company.
Charles laughed.
“Your heroic mother was a spy before she became my wife.”
Eleanor did not deny it.
Daniel turned toward her.
