Chapter 5 - The Marriage They Turned Into a Prison
Eleanor revealed she had married Charles secretly before he introduced her to Boston society.
His family refused to accept that a hotel housekeeper had become the legal wife of a Mercer heir.
They forced her to sign blank documents by threatening to fire every relative who worked in Mercer properties.
One signature came from the marriage file.
Judge Crane later placed it beneath a guardianship agreement giving the Mercer men permanent authority over her.
Victor smiled.
“You signed willingly.”
Eleanor faced him.
“A woman choosing between her freedom and twenty families losing their homes is not willing. That is extortion wearing a wedding ring.”
Rosa produced archived payroll records proving the Mercers controlled employee housing, health insurance and immigration sponsorship.
Workers who questioned missing money were evicted, dismissed or labeled dishonest.
Daniel confronted his father.
“You called Mom a social climber while your family climbed on the backs of servants.”
Charles replied, “People like them cannot manage an international company.”
Rosa answered, “We managed your rooms, kitchens, books and dying parents. You managed only the applause.”
A federal judge suspended the guardianship and froze Mercer assets.
Employees entered the boardroom for the first time.
Victor’s face finally showed fear.
Then investigators examined Eleanor’s marriage certificate.
Charles had already been married when he wed her.
His first legal wife was Judge Crane’s sister, Margaret.
If true, Eleanor had never been a Mercer spouse at all.
Victor leaned close.
“You fought thirty years for a name that was never legally yours.”
Eleanor looked at him and smiled.
“I did not come for the name.”
