Chapter 7 - The Love That Began as an Assignment
Eleanor admitted the hotel employees asked her to gather proof of pension theft.
Charles noticed her intelligence, promoted her and eventually fell in love with her.
She entered the relationship with a purpose.
Later, her feelings became real.
Daniel’s pain was immediate.
“So this entire family began with a lie.”
Eleanor did not defend herself.
“Yes. But unlike the Mercers, I did not use love to erase another person’s rights.”
Victor seized the confession.
“She manipulated Charles, produced an heir and waited for the perfect moment to take the company.”
Eleanor faced him.
“You drugged me and built a funeral while I was breathing. Do not compare my hidden investigation to attempted murder.”
Rosa revealed that the worker organization had not ordered Eleanor to marry Charles.
That choice had been hers.
The employee council voted to keep her out of automatic leadership until an independent review ended.
Eleanor accepted.
“Workers should not replace one Mercer ruler with me simply because I suffered.”
Daniel watched his mother surrender power more honestly than his father ever had.
Then Claire requested a private meeting.
She claimed she had not joined Victor for money alone.
Her mother had been one of the workers who funded the employee charter.
The Mercers threatened to destroy Claire’s family unless she married Daniel and recovered the document.
Daniel looked at her.
“You helped bury my mother to protect your family?”
Claire answered through tears.
“I believed Victor would release her after the shares transferred.”
Eleanor’s voice cut through the room.
“You chose my coffin because you feared your own door closing.”
