Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN PAID TO DISAPPEAR.
Rebecca Brooks entered the room using a cane, escorted by a legal advocate.
Daniel had never met her.
Amara did not force an emotional reunion. She asked one question.
“Did Evelyn know you were alive?”
Rebecca nodded.
“For forty years.”
Evelyn said the separation protected Daniel from scandal and gave Rebecca financial stability.
Rebecca laughed without warmth.
“They paid me enough to disappear, then called my silence consent.”
Her settlement required her to surrender patent claims and never identify herself as Daniel’s mother. When she challenged it, Pierce attorneys froze her account and threatened the clinic employing her.
Amara reviewed the contract.
“It was signed while she was recovering from delivery and had no independent counsel.”
The same hospital firm now representing Evelyn had drafted it.
Daniel returned after learning the DNA results. He stared at Rebecca but spoke first to Amara.
“Fix this before the press finds out.”
Rebecca’s face hardened.
“You abandoned five children, discovered a Black mother and still feared embarrassment first.”
