Chapter 2 - Phase OneThe chandeliers shut off first.

Then the exterior lights.
Then the heated driveway.
Adrian stared upward as the mansion fell into emergency darkness.
“What happened?”
The door attendant answered quietly:
“The property-management account has been suspended, sir.”
Margaret stepped forward.
“By whom?”
He looked at her.
“The secured lender.”
Her face changed.
Adrian pulled out his phone.
Dozens of alerts filled the screen.
Corporate cards declined.
The family investment account frozen.
Vale Development’s emergency credit line suspended.
Its pending refinancing canceled.
Margaret whispered:
“Claire.”
Vanessa looked toward the driveway where the luxury car had disappeared.
Adrian called his wife.
She rejected the call.
Then a message arrived from Vale Development’s bank:
Material misconduct review activated.
Adrian’s breathing changed.
The company had been preparing to close a nine-hundred-million-dollar refinancing package.
Without it, payroll, vendor payments and six active construction projects would be at risk.
The final approval required a compliance certification.
Claire’s signature.
That was the document she had refused to sign before Adrian struck her.
Margaret turned toward him.
“You told me she had already agreed.”
“She was supposed to.”
“Supposed to?”
Adrian looked at the silent guests waiting in nearby rooms.
“She changed her mind.”
Vanessa finally spoke.
“No.”
Everyone turned.
She continued:
“She read the labor report.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
“Stay out of this.”
Vanessa looked at Margaret.
“There were unpaid workers.”
Margaret’s expression hardened.
“Temporary subcontracting disputes.”
“Two hundred eighty-six people,” Vanessa replied.
Silence.
Adrian had wanted Claire to certify that every worker had been properly paid.
She refused.
So he accused her of humiliating him.
Then he slapped her.
The mansion intercom activated.
A recorded voice announced:
Collateral-protection protocol begins at midnight.
Margaret went pale.
May you like
Because the mansion itself was collateral.
And midnight was thirty-eight minutes away.
