She went to a twenty-four-hour union hall in Queens.
Dozens of construction workers were waiting.
Electricians.
Painters.
Carpenters.
Cleaning crews.
Some wore work boots.
Some had brought children because they could not afford late-night childcare.
A man named Luis stood when Claire entered.
His wife had been waiting four months for surgery because Vale Development had withheld his wages.
He noticed the mark on Claire’s cheek.
“What happened?”
Claire placed the compliance file on the table.
“The same thing that happens when powerful people believe silence belongs to them.”
No one asked for details.
They understood.
Claire explained that Vale’s refinancing had been stopped.
The emergency reserve would be redirected to unpaid wages before executives received anything.
A woman in a cleaning uniform stared.
“They’ll pay us first?”
“Yes.”
“What about the board?”
“They wait.”
The room became silent.
For years, workers were told executives had to be protected first so companies could survive.
Claire reversed the order.
Payroll before bonuses.
Medical bills before mansion expenses.
Pensions before family dividends.
Luis asked:
“What do you get?”
Claire looked at him.
“Control of the collateral until the debt is repaired.”
“So you own the company?”
“No.”
“Then who will?”
She placed the proposed restructuring plan on the table.
“Employees will elect two directors.”
The workers stared.
Claire continued:
“And twenty percent of any recovered equity will enter a worker trust.”
No applause came immediately.
These people had heard promises before.
Claire understood.
“You don’t have to trust me tonight.”
She looked at the documents.
“Read everything first.”
That answer changed the room.
Then Rachel called.
“Claire, the security archive arrived.”
“What does it show?”
“The slap.”
“Margaret using Vanessa’s phone.”
“And one conversation you didn’t hear.”
Claire’s expression hardened.
“Between who?”
“Adrian and the door attendant.”
