Chapter 8 - Vanessa SpokeVanessa arrived at the union hall at 1:12 a.m.

No chauffeur.

No family jewelry.

Only the black dress she had worn in the foyer and a sealed folder under one arm.

Claire looked up.

Some workers recognized her as Vale Development’s financial controller.

The room became tense.

Vanessa placed the folder on the table.

“I brought the real books.”

Inside were hidden ledgers.

Executive transfers.

False subcontractor accounts.

Household expenses labeled as project costs.

Margaret’s gowns had been charged to a hotel renovation.

Adrian’s luxury car had been listed as safety equipment.

The mansion’s wine cellar had been funded through a worker-housing budget.

Luis stared.

“My crew slept six men to a motel room.”

Vanessa lowered her eyes.

“I know.”

“You signed the reports.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

Her voice broke.

“Because my mother told me Adrian would fix everything once the refinancing closed.”

Claire watched her.

Margaret had favored Adrian from childhood.

When he failed, Vanessa repaired his mistakes.

When she succeeded, the family praised his leadership.

When she objected, Margaret reminded her that Adrian carried the family name into the next generation.

Vanessa continued:

“I thought if I protected the company long enough, she would finally trust me.”

Claire understood the humiliation.

Being rich did not make Vanessa powerful inside her own family.

But pain did not erase responsibility.

Claire said:

“You helped them.”

“Yes.”

“You stayed silent when he hit me.”

Vanessa’s eyes filled.

“Yes.”

“Then why should anyone believe you now?”

Vanessa slid one final document across the table.

“Because Margaret prepared a second forged certification.”

Claire looked down.

It transferred full control of Monroe Labor Analytics’ Vale debt to Adrian after Claire’s death.

The document was dated three weeks earlier.

And it included a life-insurance policy Claire had never seen.
