Chapter 9 - The ReturnClaire returned to the mansion at dawn.

The black double doors opened before she reached them.

The attendant stood aside.

“Welcome home, Mrs. Vale.”

Claire looked into the foyer.

Adrian stood beneath the chandelier.

Margaret beside him.

Vanessa remained near the staircase.

No guests.

No applause.

No one pretending the family was untouchable.

Adrian stepped forward.

“I am sorry.”

Claire studied him.

“For hitting me?”

“Yes.”

“For trying to forge my signature?”

“I didn’t know my mother used Vanessa’s device.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

He looked down.

Claire continued:

“For unpaid workers?”

“Yes.”

“For ordering the doors locked?”

His face changed.

Margaret turned sharply toward him.

Claire already had the recording.

Adrian whispered:

“I thought you would leave before we could talk.”

“No.”

“You thought the house belonged to you.”

Silence.

“You thought the door belonged to you.”

Silence.

“You thought I belonged to you.”

His eyes filled.

Claire placed the life-insurance document on a marble table.

Adrian stared.

“I’ve never seen that.”

Margaret said nothing.

Claire turned toward her.

“You prepared this.”

The older woman lifted her chin.

“It was standard estate planning.”

“It transferred my company debt to Adrian if I died.”

“You were his wife.”

“It also insured me for fifty million dollars.”

Margaret’s confidence faltered.

Claire continued:

“And you forged my consent.”

Margaret finally looked afraid.

Then Claire placed the mansion keys before the attendant.

“The staff controls access until the audit is complete.”

Adrian whispered:

“What about our marriage?”

Claire removed her wedding ring.

She set it beside the keys.

“You ended that before I reached the door.”

For one satisfying moment, no one in the Vale family had the authority to contradict her.

Then Vanessa’s phone rang.

She listened.

Her face turned white.

“Claire.”

May you like

“What?”

“Someone just accessed the life-insurance policy.”
