Chapter 7 - The MansionAt midnight, the transfer occurred.
The Vale mansion became collateral-controlled property of Monroe Labor Analytics.
Margaret remained beneath the dark chandelier when the door attendant approached.
“Mrs. Vale, the occupancy license has been suspended.”
She stared.
“This is my home.”
“No, ma’am.”
The answer humiliated her more than shouting could have.
“It belongs to the secured lender.”
Adrian stepped forward.
“You work for us.”
The attendant removed the Vale crest pin from his uniform.
“My wages haven’t been paid in seven weeks.”
Silence.
Vanessa looked at him.
“Seven?”
He nodded.
The family had continued holding charity galas while household employees waited for checks.
Margaret’s face hardened.
“You should have spoken to me.”
“I submitted four notices.”
She had never read them.
Staff complaints were handled below her level.
Until the staff member controlled the door.
The attendant opened the black double doors.
“You may remain tonight under temporary occupancy.”
Margaret lifted her chin.
“We are not leaving.”
He looked directly at her.
“Mrs. Claire Vale will decide that.”
The same woman Margaret considered unworthy of the family now controlled whether Margaret could sleep in the mansion.
Adrian’s phone rang.
Claire’s name appeared.
He answered immediately.
“Claire.”
Her voice was calm.
“The staff will remain.”
He froze.
“The housekeeper.”
“The kitchen team.”
“The grounds crew.”
“The attendants.”
“All unpaid wages will be released tonight.”
Margaret stared.
“And us?” Adrian asked.
Claire paused.
“You may stay until morning.”
Relief crossed his face.
Then she continued:
“After that, the worker representatives will inspect every property purchased with diverted payroll funds.”
The relief disappeared.
