Chapter 2 - The Thirty Million
Ethan’s late mother had created the Bruno Care Trust six years earlier.
The name made it sound sentimental.
It was not.
While Bruno remained alive and independently supervised, the trust’s thirty million dollars funded three programs:
Veterinary care for retired household employees.
Accessible transportation for elderly residents.
And Harbor Cottages, a protected housing community for mansion and hotel workers.
If Bruno died naturally, the remaining money would continue supporting those programs.
But if he was officially missing for more than seventy-two hours, temporary control passed to Ethan’s spouse.
Victoria had married Ethan eight months earlier.
Her authority would begin the next morning.
Arthur opened the trust summary.
Victoria could not spend the thirty million personally.
But she could approve property sales, change service providers and replace the employee representatives overseeing Harbor Cottages.
Ethan stared at her.
“You told me Bruno slipped through an open gate.”
“He did.”
“Maya found the carrier tag.”
Victoria’s gaze shifted toward the house manager’s uniform.
“She handles all household identification records.”
The accusation came naturally.
A valuable object disappeared.
A wealthy woman needed an explanation.
The employee with access became the suspect.
Maya opened the mansion’s pet-care log on her tablet.
Bruno had been signed out for a routine examination by Dr. Mason.
The return line was blank.
Mason straightened his jacket.
“He became agitated during transport.”
Bruno looked at him and remained completely calm.
Maya turned to the veterinarian.
“You reported that he bit through his leash.”
The severed strap lay beside the carrier.
The cut was clean.
No tooth damage.
No torn fibers.
Leah Foster, Bruno’s independent trainer, joined by video and confirmed it.
“That leash was cut with a blade.”
Victoria’s face tightened.
The trust clock had not begun because Bruno wandered away.
Someone had started it deliberately.
Then Ethan examined the hotel keycard.
