Chapter 8 - The Hidden Buyer
Under the false bottom lay the real purchase agreement.
Victoria’s company was not the final buyer.
It would hold Harbor Cottages for ninety days, then default deliberately on a private loan.
The property would transfer to Palm Meridian Fiduciary Partners.
Victoria stared at the name.
“That was not our agreement.”
Mason looked equally frightened.
“You said the refinancing was temporary.”
Arthur remained calm.
Too calm.
Maya noticed.
Palm Meridian was controlled by a family trust company registered at the same address as Arthur’s private office.
Ethan slowly turned toward the trustee.
“You were the final buyer.”
Arthur did not immediately deny it.
He had explained the thirty-million-dollar clause.
Produced the trust summary.
Authorized the audit.
Presented himself as the authority who arrived after the corruption began.
But he had written the transaction structure years earlier.
Victoria and Mason were meant to create the false disappearance.
They would receive fees.
They would absorb the scandal if discovered.
Arthur would receive the land.
“You used them,” Ethan said.
Arthur looked at Victoria.
“She wanted money.”
At Mason.
“He wanted status.”
Then at Maya.
“And the employees were not monitoring a complicated trust.”
Maya’s expression hardened.
“They were working.”
“Yes.”
The honesty was colder than denial.
Arthur believed exhausted workers, elderly residents and household employees could never follow shell companies through trust law.
He had been correct for years.
The Harbor council froze Palm Meridian’s acquisition.
Arthur’s trustee powers were suspended.
An independent fiduciary replaced him.
But the company had already purchased something else.
Using the retirement reserve, Palm Meridian acquired twenty-eight percent of Harrington Coastal Hotels.
The shares were registered under a nominee.
Ethan looked at the document.
“Who is the nominee?”
Arthur smiled faintly.
“Maya Brooks.”
Every face turned toward her.
She went still.
“I have never owned company shares.”
The certificate contained her employee number.
