Chapter 9 - Maya’s Name

Victoria stared at Maya as though the accusation restored the natural order of the world.
“The house manager planned this.”
Maya did not move.
Arthur had selected the perfect nominee.
An employee with access to household records.
A woman whose mother lived at Harbor Cottages.
Someone who would appear to have both motive and opportunity.
If the scheme succeeded, Arthur controlled the shares through her identity.
If it failed, Maya looked like the poor employee who stole from wealthy employers.
The mansion system showed her badge entering Arthur’s office eleven times.
Maya opened her work schedule.
Each entry occurred while she was managing events in other parts of the property.
Someone had cloned her badge.
The carrier handle contained a concealed badge reader.
When Maya grabbed it to save Bruno, the device copied her current authentication token.
The rescue itself had been designed to create fresh evidence against her.
Ethan looked toward Arthur.
“You expected her to stop the carrier.”
“She always protects the household.”
The answer revealed how long he had watched her.
Maya’s competence had become part of his plan.
He knew she would run toward danger.
Then used that dignity as a signature.
Bruno walked to Arthur.
He remained calm.
No barking.
No aggression.
He tapped the trustee’s right shoe once.
A small electronic badge writer was secured beneath the trouser cuff.
Arthur’s composure finally cracked.
Maya removed nothing herself.
The independent attorney collected the device.
It contained copied credentials from housekeepers, drivers, veterinary staff and retired residents.
Arthur had been building false identities for years.
The employee council froze every transaction tied to those credentials.
Maya’s name was cleared from the nominee account.
The twenty-eight-percent hotel interest entered the worker trust pending ownership review.
Then the external auditor found the source of Palm Meridian’s original capital.
It was not family money.
May you like
It came from Bruno’s thirty-million-dollar trust.
Arthur had borrowed against the dog before planning to make him disappear.
