THE $30 MILLION DOG / Chapter 6 / 10

Chapter 6 - The Anniversary Bill

The anniversary gala had also been paid from the same reserve.

White flowers.

Champagne.

The terrace musicians.

Victoria’s gown allowance.

Mason’s hotel suite.

Even the carrier used to create Bruno’s disappearance.

Retired staff had been told their medical reimbursements were delayed because the trust lacked liquidity.

A former gardener waited eight months for a mobility scooter.

A housekeeper’s widow lived with a broken air conditioner through a Miami summer.

A retired cook had been denied home-care support.

Meanwhile, the trust spent millions celebrating Ethan and Victoria beside a turquoise pool.

Victoria called the event donor cultivation.

Maya looked at the employees serving drinks.

“They were told this was a family party.”

“They were denied overtime.”

Ethan opened the payroll file.

Maya was right.

The workers had paid for the gala through retirement deductions, then were underpaid to serve it.

His own waterfront guesthouse appeared in the same ledger.

Twenty-two million dollars from the reserve had financed its renovation.

“My father told me the money came from a real-estate account.”

Arthur looked at him.

“And you accepted it.”

Ethan nodded.

“Yes.”

Victoria seized the admission.

“He benefited too.”

Ethan faced her.

“Yes.”

He did not call it an accounting problem.

He placed the guesthouse into immediate sale review.

Every dollar would return to the retirement reserve before any family distribution resumed.

The gala bill moved to his personal account.

All employees would receive full wages and overtime.

Delayed medical and housing claims reopened.

Maya did not praise him.

Returning stolen money was not generosity.

Ethan turned toward the staff.

“I should have known.”

An older server answered from beside the champagne table.

“You could afford not to.”

The sentence stayed with him.

Then Arthur announced that the locked briefcase could finally be opened.

He entered the trustee code.

The lock rejected him.

Bruno tapped the lid again.

May you like

Three times.

The case recognized the dog’s microchip instead.
