Chapter 4 - The False Certificate

Mason claimed the certificate was a standard template.
Arthur examined the document.
It identified Bruno by breed, color, age and microchip number.
The cause line had been left blank.
The trust notification box had already been checked.
Ethan’s voice lowered.
“You prepared to declare my dog dead.”
“No.”
“I prepared for every possible outcome.”
“Before examining him?”
Mason looked toward Victoria.
She did not help him.
Maya opened Bruno’s clinic file.
His last examination showed normal health.
No serious condition.
No reason for emergency observation.
Yet Mason had billed the trust for specialized treatment, overnight monitoring and private transport.
The carrier rolling toward the pool was not intended to harm Bruno.
It was intended to be found.
An apparently abandoned carrier near open water would support a story that the dog escaped, reached the terrace and disappeared.
Bruno himself had been scheduled for transfer to a private kennel in another state.
After seventy-two hours, the trust would recognize him as officially gone.
Victoria would receive temporary control.
Months later, Bruno could be “found” and quietly rehomed.
Ethan stared at her.
“You were going to take him away and call it grief.”
Victoria’s expression hardened.
“You care more about that dog than the future of this family.”
Bruno pressed closer to Ethan’s leg.
Maya looked at Victoria.
“He was easier to remove because he could not explain what happened.”
Mason interrupted.
“No animal was going to be harmed.”
Arthur faced him.
“You still used a living creature as a false legal event.”
The trust audit froze Mason’s invoices.
His clinic could continue treating ordinary patients, but no payment connected to Bruno or Harbor Cottages would move without independent review.
Victoria’s authority remained suspended.
Then Maya checked the carrier’s wheel lock.
It had not failed.
Someone had deliberately released it moments before the gala.

The security log identified the person.
Ethan.
