Chapter 1 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE BLUE DOOR.

Victoria screamed when Alexander reached for the blue door.
Three weak knocks answered from behind it.
Emma clutched her floral backpack. “Mommy said Dad would come if I kept the bracelet safe.”
Alexander unlocked the door with the key from Victoria’s necklace. Inside sat his wife, Claire, conscious but pale, wrapped in a blanket beside water and medication. He had been told she left eight years earlier.
Claire looked at Emma first. “You kept the bag.”
Victoria called the room a private recovery suite.
Claire’s voice shook. “Recovery rooms open from the inside.”
Alexander ordered police, paramedics and an independent child advocate. He did not touch Victoria, but his words froze the foyer.
“You stole eight years from my wife and daughter.”
Then Claire pointed at the backpack.
“The evidence is not only about me. Victoria wanted that bag because it proves Emma owns this house.”

Emma opened the main zipper.
Inside lay a deed bearing Alexander’s signature.
