Hospital records showed Lily Bennett was Claire’s niece, born to her younger sister, Maya, who worked in the mansion kitchen.
Maya died after being denied treatment by a Hawthorne-owned clinic. Victoria placed Lily with a wealthy donor family and told Claire the baby had not survived.
The donor family had paid the Hawthorne Foundation three million dollars for a “legacy contribution.”
Emma stared at Victoria.
“You sold a baby?”
Victoria called it a lawful private placement.
Daniel Brooks answered, “Law becomes camouflage when the same family controls the clinic, lawyers and charity.”
Lily was located safely in Maryland. She had been told her birth family abandoned her. Contact would proceed slowly through independent advocates, not through a dramatic forced reunion.
The worker council traced the donor payment to the mansion renovation and Alexander’s first business loan.
He placed the loan profits under restitution review.
Then Lily’s sealed file arrived.
The guardianship application named Alexander as the person who approved her placement.
