Chapter 6 - THE SILENCE CLAIRE SOLD.
Claire admitted the settlement money paid for Emma’s surgery and safe housing after Victoria canceled their insurance.
“I chose my child,” she said. “But my silence allowed other families to be removed.”
Evelyn’s hurt was sharper than accusation.
“You were not wrong to save her. You were wrong to let us believe no evidence existed.”
Claire placed every remaining dollar under worker control and stepped away from leadership.
Alexander tried to defend her. Mr. Hale stopped him.
“Fear explains a compromised choice. Marriage does not erase its consequences.”
Victoria claimed everyone had benefited from the Hawthorne system.
The pharmacist answered, “You created emergencies, then sold relief as generosity.”
Police recovered camera footage from the blue room. It showed Victoria ordering a guard to hide Claire whenever Alexander returned from business trips.
One guard refused and was fired.
His name was Daniel Brooks, Emma’s biological grandfather.
