Chapter 2 - The Judgment Written First
Michael recognized the signature but not the document.
Vanessa claimed he had approved a “behavior plan” after the children broke a vase.
“She said wealthy families can return children when they become inconvenient,” the youngest girl whispered.
Vanessa crossed her arms.
“They came from foster care with nothing. A warm home should make them grateful.”
Michael replied:
“Gratitude is not obedience. And poverty is not a crime.”
The document redirected the children’s benefits into an education fund controlled by Vanessa.
Their biological mother, Rachel Owens, had been a cafeteria worker who died after reporting wage theft in the school system.
Vanessa’s brother managed the fund.
Police reviewed kitchen security footage. The video was erased, but audio remained:

The voice belonged to Michael’s family attorney.
