Chapter 2 - THE ROOM BEHIND THE KITCHEN.

The brass key opened a narrow records room hidden behind the pantry wall.
Victoria immediately called it private family property.
“Maya stole that key. She has always confused access with ownership.”
Maya wiped her face.
“My mother cleaned this kitchen for twenty-three years. She died asking why the staff pension account disappeared.”
Adrian found ledgers stacked inside a locked cabinet. Employee deductions had funded the mansion’s renovation, Victoria’s engagement gala, and the diamond now lying in the trash.
Victoria called the transfers temporary loans.
A housekeeper named Rosa stepped forward.
“My husband died waiting for the health coverage your family called temporary.”
Adrian’s anger shifted into shame. His signature appeared on several approvals.
“I never saw these pages.”
Maya looked at him steadily.
“You had lawyers, money, and every reason to read. Workers had one paycheck and no room for mistakes.”
Then Rosa removed a sealed envelope from the cabinet.
It was addressed to Maya.
