Chapter 4 - THE NAME BENEATH THE CRACKERS.
Maya’s original birth certificate listed Elena as her mother.
The father’s name had been sealed by court order.
Victoria dismissed it.
“A housekeeper’s child does not become an heir because someone hides paper inside a bowl.”
Rosa looked at the bowl with disgust.
“You made her eat from the same object carrying the proof you were afraid of.”
The cruelty had been deliberate. Victoria knew the bowl came from Elena’s locked belongings. She used it to humiliate Maya, never realizing Elena had built a false bottom beneath the label.
Adrian found a second document: an amendment transferring the mansion to the employee trust if any Whitmore officer publicly degraded, threatened, or removed its trustee.
Victoria’s face lost color.
By forcing Maya onto the floor before witnesses, she had activated the clause herself.
Guests began drifting into the kitchen, no longer pretending the scandal was private.
Victoria pointed at Maya.
“She planned this performance.”
Maya answered quietly.
“I planned to deliver records. You supplied the cruelty.”
Then the court seal on the birth certificate became visible.
